Patan has another claim to fame. Patola silk. These double-ikat saris are made entirely by hand, and the method is so tricky that only a few families still know it. The Salvi families have carried the skill forward for many generations. A single sari can take four to six months to finish. Prices climb into several lakhs of rupees. Cloth this rare is hard to find anywhere.

These days Patan keeps on growing. It is a busy district town with shops, schools, and museums, and the local market stays full of life. Out in the district, farmers raise cotton, cumin, and vegetables. Roads tie Patan to Ahmedabad, Mehsana, and Chanasma. Trains use the Mahesana-Viramgam-Surendranagar broad gauge line.
